Obituary

George T. Strumbos left his house on Sunday, August 14th, 2016, for a casual bike ride near his home in Boulder, Colorado. Surrounded by his beloved Rocky Mountain scenery and engaged in one of his favorite pastimes, George left us unexpectedly and suddenly at the age of 64. A devoted father, loyal friend, avid reader, sports fanatic and part-time bon vivant, George will be remembered fondly by the many people he touched.

George spent his childhood in Michigan but made his home in Boulder, Colorado in his early 20s. A life-long learner, polymath, outdoor enthusiast and athlete, he remained in Boulder for the rest of his life, where he started a family, ran a bicycle shop with his brother Nicholas, pursued broad academic interests at the University of Colorado, and became a staple at local sporting events and restaurants. Known and loved by hundreds of Boulder residents, George was always greeted warmly wherever he went, often sitting at the bar and chatting with friends for hours. His amicable nature and encyclopedic knowledge of geology, history, sports, and current events endeared him instantly to almost everyone who met him.

George was a loving father who made great sacrifices for his two children, John and Diana. He was a mentor, confidant, and role model whose intellectualism and encouragement inspired both children to pursue doctorate degrees. Ever a loyal son and brother, George also went to great extremes to support the family manufacturing business, traveling back and forth to Michigan on a regular basis for decades. His selfless and steadfast dedication to his family was a source of great strength and unity during many difficult times.

In 2006, George was diagnosed with an idiopathic non-ischemic cardiomyopathy. George refused to let a heart condition prevent him from hiking, biking, skiing and fully enjoying his active lifestyle. He is survived by his children John and Diana, his mother Christine, his brothers Nicholas and Peter, his sister Catherine and brother-in-law Dozer Strangway, and his nieces Jean, Lucy, and Chrystyna. His father, George Strumbos, who passed away in 2012, had suffered from a stroke in 1998 from which he never fully recovered.

Family will receive friends Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 9:00am until funeral service at 11:00am at A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home, 32515 Woodward Ave. (btwn 13 - 14 Mile Rd.), Royal Oak.

A separate memorial service will be held in Boulder in September.

The family invites memorial donations to the American Heart Association.
